Entrepreneurial Center of Gravity

The role of coworking in a startup community

A few weeks ago Mark Suster, startup founder and venture capitalist based in Los Angeles, wrote about a post about the components of an entrepreneurial community: How to Kick Start Your Community’s Startup Scene. It made the rounds in my social circles in particular for a shoutout to our friends at Dwolla.

I think and write a lot about this topic and was encouraged by Mark’s take. A few of the components he pointed out are particularly apropos as we’re working to establish Gravitate — an entrepreneurial center of gravity — here in the core of downtown Des Moines.

Gravitate is a go!

Less than a month ago, I first wrote about a group of startup community members in Des Moines working to establish a new entrepreneurial center of gravity in the heart of the city. Late last week we crossed the membership point where it's feasible for the project to work on a month-to-month basis. Today, I'm excited to announce that the project is officially moving forward (yeah!).

Last week we announced the details of the plans for Gravitate, a new entrepreneurial center of gravity in downtown Des Moines. The response has been tremendous — in just two days 5 of the 9 available offices have been claimed, several people joined as social members and we're more than a third of the way to our monthly revenue goal. This community is amazing.

The next thing we need to do is raise funds to build out the space and purchase furniture. Several people have inquired on how they can help with this so we've set up a three different levels where companies can get involved.

Introducing 'Gravitate' — a new entrepreneurial center of gravity in Des Moines

Two weeks ago, I shared the start of a plan that several folks in the community have been working on to establish a new "entrepreneurial center of gravity" in downtown Des Moines starting this fall.

In that time we've had dozens of additional conversations, worked up several different layouts and even settled on a name — Gravitate.

Now we’re at the exciting point where we can share specifics on the space itself and start signing up members.

A plan for Des Moines’ next “entrepreneurial center of gravity”

StartupCity Des Moines has been the Central Iowa “entrepreneurial center of gravity” in Des Moines for the past few years. Unfortunately, it’s planning for a hard stop at the end of September. That organization’s leaders have done a lot to encourage others in the community to build upon their work and establish some sort of successor initiative. Over the past several weeks I’ve been working with a few folks in the community and I think we have a solid idea.
